Merlin’s Refuge is changing the way we do business.  Due to recent changes in Nebraska state law under the Commercial Dog and Cat Operator Inspection Act (NEB REV STAT 54-625 to 54-643), Merlin’s Refuge has determined that we will no longer assume superior ownership of any pets we assist in placing in new homes. In order to ensure that our organization is in full compliance with the amended statute, we will no longer house pets veterinary offices or foster homes.  The reason for this is simple, since we do not have a facility to temporarily house pets, our foster families may have (now or in the future) been placed in the unwelcome position of involuntary submission to a state inspection of their home simply because they were fostering for us.  While we wholeheartedly support the spirit of the law, we cannot place foster families in such a position.

What this means to the community we service is this: We are continuing to fill the gap for pet owners and potential pet owners in much the same way we did before.  We do all the leg work in finding potential adopters, we don’t charge any fees for our services, and we ensure that the pets are spayed, neutered, and are current on all shots.

All we require from the current owner is patience and that they continue to provide a loving and healthy home for their pet until we can find a new owner that can do the same.

The current owner provides the adoption criteria, retains superior ownership of the pet and has full control of the adoption and surrender process.  However, Merlin’s Refuge will not refer individuals, which do not meet our screening requirements regardless of the standards set by the current owners.  In short, we will not assist pet owners in simply “dumping” a pet on the nearest person willing to take the pet off their hands. This approach offers all the advantages of a comfortable, stress free transition for the pet while ensuring that the long-term welfare of the pet is the top priority.

Merlin’s Refuge is currently seeking a Director of Fund Raising.  Compensation for the position is commission based at 20% of funds raised.  Interested parties should send their resume and references ATTN: Kyle Frye, Merlin’s Refuge, PO Box 391192, Omaha NE, 68139.
